Elena Ryland is a criminal defence lawyer at Kraus Janzen Ryland Law, dedicated to protecting clients’ rights and delivering strategic, results-driven representation in challenging and high-stakes criminal cases. Her foundation in criminal law began at the University of Alberta, where she centred her studies on Criminal Law and gained practical courtroom experience through Student Legal Services. She further strengthened her advocacy skills by competing in the Deans’ Cup Moot and representing the university in the national Gale Cup Moot.

Before co-founding Kraus Janzen Ryland Law, she articled at a respected criminal defence firm in Edmonton, contributing to major cases involving murder, sexual assault, kidnapping, and drug trafficking. She also worked with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Services, gaining insight into prosecutorial decision-making and how files are assessed, charged, and advanced. This experience allows her to anticipate Crown strategy and build proactive, targeted defence plans for her clients.

Today, she practices exclusively in criminal defence, representing individuals facing a wide range of criminal and quasi-criminal allegations. In addition to her focused experience in sexual assault offences and domestic violence cases, she has extensive experience defending clients charged with:

• Criminal and Administrative Driving Offences (including impaired driving, dangerous driving, and Immediate Roadside Sanctions)
• Property Offences, such as theft, fraud, robbery, and breaking and entering
• Drug Trafficking and Possession offences

This role allows her to contribute to the next generation of advocates while expanding access to justice in the community.
