R v M.
Our client was charged with assaulting a police officer and flight from police, serious offences that typically result in a criminal conviction. The video evidence in the case was strong, and after careful consideration, our client instructed us to pursue a resolution rather than proceed to trial.
We immediately set to work advocating on our client’s behalf. We brought forward important context surrounding the incident, including evidence that our client was in the midst of a mental health crisis at the time. We emphasized his lack of prior criminal history, his willingness to engage in treatment, and his genuine remorse.
After meaningful discussions, the Crown agreed to resolve the matter by way of a peace bond, an exceptional outcome in cases involving allegations of violence against police officers. As a result, our client avoided a criminal record and was able to focus on getting the support he needed.
